Say goodbye to boring grammar review! These five grammar stations enable your students to engage with grammar in a way that gets them moving around, interacting with mentor sentences, and playing with language!!
The Stations:
Action and Linking Verbs Station: Students have a stack of mentor sentences printed on half-sheet paper. They separate the sentences that contain linking verbs from the ones that contain action verbs.
Adjectives and Adverbs Station: Students get several hand-held cards with interesting and unique pictures on them. They'll brainstorm lists of adjectives and adverbs that can be associated with each picture. If time allows, they can begin crafting a short writing inspired by one of the pictures.
Sentence Building Station: Students get several sentence parts on cut-out pieces of paper: subjects, verbs, adjectives, adverbs,, clauses, and punctuation. Students will move through a slideshow that directs them to create sentences out of their movable pieces. For instance, "Create a sentence that has a vivid verb and includes at least one subordinate clause."
Story Creation Station: Students work with a partner and ask them for specific parts of speech to fill out the story provided. The end result is hilarious! This is a simple and fun way to review parts of speech. These stories have been designed specifically for high school students.
Sentences Types Station: Students will be given a stack of mentor sentences printed on half sheets of paper. They will separate the mentor sentences into 4 piles: simple, compound, complex and compound complex. This is a great activity to work with mentor sentences and see how all types of sentences can be powerful!
You'll Also Get:
Student handout that includes directions for each station and space for them to write down key ideas they worked with at that station.
Complete lesson plan for how to set up and run the stations that includes objectives (great to show admin)!
Each station takes about 7-10 minutes for most learners to complete, allowing that day's lesson to be covered!
Optional ways to debrief are included in teacher directions.
